Investigation of glottal flow spectral slope as possible cue for depression and near-term suicidal risk

چکیده
When reviewing his clinical experience in treating suicidal patients, one of the authors observed that successful predictions of suicidality were often based on the patient’s voice independent of content. In this study we investigated the discriminating power of an excitation-based speech parameter, the glottal flow spectrum. There were two sets of subjects, male and female. Each set consisted of 10 high-risk near-term suicidal patients, 10 major depressed patients, and 10 non-depressed control subjects. As a result of two sample statistical analyses, the slope of the glottal flow spectrum, was a significant discriminator in five of six comparisons (p<0.05). A maximum likelihood classifier, developed by combining the a posteriori probabilities of two features, yielded correct classification scores between 60 and 95%.

Steady Flow Through Modeled Glottal Constriction
The airflow in the modeled glottal constriction was simulated by the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flow, and the corresponding Reynolds equations for turbulent flow in generalized, nonorthogonal coordinates using a numerical method. A two-dimensional model of laryngeal flow is considered and aerodynamic properties are calculated for both laminar and turbulent steady flows...
متن کاملStylization of glottal-flow spectra produced b
A method is proposed to extract glottal-flow spectra from numerical simulations of vocal-fold behavior with a two-mass model including dynamic flow separation. The numerical spectrum, whose general form complies with that of signal glottal-flow models, allows stylization with three linear segments. The slope of the first segment remains relatively constant when source control parameters are var...
متن کاملNumerical Study of turbulent free convection of liquid metal with constant and variable properties in the presence of magnetic field
In this research, turbulent MHD convection of liquid metal with constant and variable properties is investigated numerically. The finite volume method is applied to model the fluid flow and natural convection heat transfer in a square cavity. The fluid flow and heat transfer were simulated and compared for two cases constant and variable properties. It is observed that for the case variable pro...
متن کاملMultiple Mental Disorders and Suicidality; Cross-Ethnic Variation among Blacks
Background: For psychiatric disorders, comorbidity is a rule rather than exception. Thus it is particularly important to study additive and multiplicative effects of multiple mental disorders on suicidal behaviors. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the ethnic differences in multiplicative effects of mental disorders on suicidal ideation among Black adults in the United States...
متن کاملLinearity of the Function between the Sound Pressure Level of Speech and the Negative Peak Amplitude of the Differentiated Glottal Flow for Voices of Different Intensities
The negative peak amplitude of the differentiated glottal flow (dpeak) is known to correlate strongly with the sound pressure level (SPL) of speech. Therefore, the function between dpeak and SPL is usually modeled as a single line. In this survey, the relationship between dpeak and SPL is revisited by analyzing glottal flows inverse filtered from speech sounds of largely different intensities. ...
